Weekend Shenanigans

Hey guys, I meant to post this on Monday but life got in the way >.< (don't you hate it when that happens?). This weekend was actually quite eventful, and I'm now kicking myself for not taking pictures to share with you guys. So beware: lack of pictures of lots of text ahead haha xD

Let's start off with Friday night since I can't remember what I did in the morning besides pick up my laundry and run a couple other errands. I was really excited about going out that night. My roommate, Janice, had a friend in town as did my cousin (who lives about a 10 minute walk from me yet I hadn't seen in over a month) so I was excited at the prospect of meeting new people and having fun in a big group. We didn't really have any structured plans, but we figured we would see where the night would take us. We started off the night at a bar called Bua where I got the very Foursquare-recommended drink, Red Lemonade. Unfortunately, I think there was a little bit too much lemon and too little red. It was not the fruity strawberry lemonade drink I was imagining. Oh well. I stuck with various dark ales and ciders the rest of the evening. Then we moved to a larger bar called Spitzer's. Afterwards, we were feeling a little hungry so we headed to a tiny (there's literally three stools inside) late night taco shop called Snack Dragon. All their tacos come on blue tortilla shells like the Carne Asada taco I ordered below. Quite tasty, but maybe just a dollar or two overpriced at $4-7 a taco. What can I say, blame it on Taco Bell, but I'm a cheapskate when it comes to tacos xD Our last destination was a super crowded bar that played non-stop hip hop music. Not really my scene, but we were all getting tired anyway so we didn't stay too long before going home for the night.

The Carne Asada: marinated steak, black beans, homemade salsa, cheese, sour cream and cilantro
Saturday, I started off my day with breakfast with my roomie, John, at a little diner called Coffee Shop Diner (creative, isn't it?) that was actually featured in an episode of Louie. Afterwards, we both did some spring cleaning around the apartment during which time my cousin came over and dropped off a package that my dad had sent me from home. It contained homemade oatmeal raisin cookies (so yummy!), boxes of Kraft Mac n' Cheese, 2 containers of pepper spray, and a mini can of spaghetti-os (random but so cute!). John and I got an hour in at the gym before it closed then grabbed some food at Sushi Lounge before parting ways for the night.

stillbeingmollyI met up with my friend Chandra at an Irish tavern not too far from my apartment. Her roommate, Jackie's, friend's friend (I hope that make sense) was celebrating his birthday with a bunch of guys from the NYU hockey team. I felt like the old lady of the group (in the best way) as I sipped on a Guinness and watched with amusement as weirdness unfolded around me. It was one of the those bizarre nights that ends with you walking home at 6am after visiting a McDonald's where you and your one friend order 40 chicken McNuggets and you end your no-fast-food streak while drunk Canadian tourists wave a stack of twenties in your friend's face and she convinces them she has no name and that you are only 16 years old. I was also called a young Jennifer Lopez and a young Selena Gomez - even though I'm order than her...but I'll take it. And the kicker - I only had two beers the whole night! Oh, shenanigans indeed xD

Wearing my new Urban Outfitters crop top that I scored for $5 at Buffalo Exchange.
After two nights out, Sunday was pretty low-key aka I spent most of my day watching Law and Order: SVU on Netflix. Oh, wait, I did do grocery shopping. See, I was productive :D

How was your weekend?

This week's Sunday Social is all about Spring!

1. What is your favorite thing about Spring? The arrival of warmer weather!! I don't think New York's gotten the memo that it's Spring now thought...

2. Favorite kind of flowers to grow or receive? Roses, gardenia, and lilies :)

3. What is your favorite nail polish color? I love bright colors! Some of my favorites are China Glazes's Refresh-mint, Essie's Lilacism, and Butter London's Slapper and Salmon

What are your "so what's" this week?

RIP Google Reader

So, as everyone and their mother probably know by now, Google Reader will soon go the way of the dodo come July 1, 2013. Is this cause for panic? Not really - unless that was the main way you were keeping up with your blogs. Personally, I use the Blogger Reading List and this doesn't appear to be going anywhere right now.

But what about GFC? There were so many things being said, I was a little confused at first, but after doing a little research, I've realized that the passing of Google Reader doesn't necessarily mean the end of GFC (Google Friend Connect) - at least not for now. In the future, yes, it is very likely that Google will get rid of it. So what can we do to safeguard ourselves before this happens? I would suggest finding other ways to follow blogs and promoting those different ways of following.

One popular alternative that has been booming thanks to this Google Reader news is Bloglovin'. The great thing about Bloglovin' is that not only is it very user friendly, but it's SUPER easy to transfer all your blogs over from Google Reader. I'm going to go ahead and take this time now to pimp my Bloglovin' page out as I've just started using it and it could use a little lovin'...haha.

Me, Myself, and I

1. Do you celebrate Saint Patrick's Day? How?
Despite being 23 years old, my celebrations of St. Patrick's Day have only consisted in me wearing green. While I still have yet to celebrate on the actual day (in the past I've always had an exam or work and this year, I was just tired), I DID do an afternoon pub crawl the day before. I went to an Irish whiskey tasting right beforehand so by the time it hit 4pm, I seriously thought it was already 4am (not joking). Needless to say, my day ended pretty early and I got to spend the actual St. Paddy's Day recuperating by watching old seasons of The Office on Netflix.

With my amazing friend, Chandra. We're at a bar where you get a free personal pizza with every beer you buy!

2. It's March which means spring break! We want to know how your spring break went or if it hasn't happened yet, what will your spring break consist of?
No Spring Break for me anymore :( Just another normal work week.

3. A Zombie Apocalypse happens and you're stripped of all your luxury items. What beauty product would you miss the most?
Hmmm...Probably foundation - what can I say? I like having even-looking skin.

4. What is the one cause that you feel most passionate about?
I'm particularly passionate about anything having to do with helping animals or ending MS (my dad has it :().

5. What's the #1 most played song on your ipod?
My music collection is only a shadow of what it used to be ever since I got a new laptop over a year ago. I went from thousands of songs to only a couple hundred. I simply just don't have the time or energy anymore to build my collection back up. My most played song then with probably hundreds of play was probably some Disney song but as my iTunes currently stands, my top song is Fun.'s "We Are Young." Doesn't surprise me at all.

My Day at the MoMA

In the roughly two and half months I've spent living in New York, I have yet to do anything really "touristy" or see any of the sights that the city has to offer. Two Fridays ago I got to change that. I went to the Museum of Modern Art aka the MoMA for the first time, and what's even better is that I got to go for free! The MoMA has "Free Fridays" sponsored by Target that gives anyone free entry from 4-8pm. There's usually a long line you have to go through but, don't worry, it moves SUPER fast. WARNING: TONS of pictures ahead! :D

There are 6 floors filled with enough sights to definitely keep you preoccupied for several hours. Initially, I wasn't sure how I would like the museum since I'm not the biggest fan of some modern art that I find to be a little pretentious (although I feel saying that makes me somewhat pretentious haha), but I had an incredible time. I especially loved the paintings. It was amazing to see in person what were merely pictures in my old college humanities books.

Just some of the weird "art" at the MoMA

Haha <3
A collage of a bunch of different paintings.
I really liked the Pollack on the upper right.
I'm sure you guys are familiar with this!
This Monet painting of water lilies was HUGE!

A big and pleasant surprise at the museum was seeing that they had two of the most iconic paintings I can think of just short of the Mona Lisa: Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night and Edvard Munch's The Scream. There were huge crowds of people wanting to take pictures in front of each painting, and I remember thinking these must be some pretty important paintings to garner such a crowd, and boy was I right! It was almost surreal seeing them both in front of me, especially since Starry Night is probably one of my favorite paintings.

Isn't the rest of Munch's work (above) just as somber and dark as The Scream? I feel like he must've been a very sad and haunted person to create such works.. Now just a few more pictures of random paintings before I overload your computer..I just couldn't help myself XD

Have you guys ever been to the MoMA? What are some of your favorite paintings?

Sunday Social

It's Sunday so you know what that means... Sunday Social question time!

1. Favorite thing to do on a rainy day? NAP!! When it rains, I want nothing more than to just sleep all day.

2. Favorite thing to do on a Summer weekend? Go to the movies! I love summer movies =) I cannot wait for Star Trek Into Darkness this May!!

3. Favorite Spring accessory? My mind is blanking and all I that's coming to me are wedge heels. I absolutely love them and can't wait for it to be spring so I can break mine out again!

4. Favorite way to spend a Winter day? Inside, watching Netflix or Youtube videos and reading blogs.

5. What is your favorite season and why? Fall - because it's not too cold and not too hot - the weather's perfect. Plus, I loveee the fall smells and food.

6. Best birthday you ever had? I think I've recently answered this question or I'm having a case of deja vu - it was either my HUGE 6th birthday party at McDonald's or my more recent 22nd Harry Potter themed party because, well...it was HARRY POTTER themed!

Hope you all have a great Sunday! :)

It's Okay Thursdays

It's okay...

That I slept for 14 hours on my day off (and to my credit, I was sick with a cold)

To watch Law and Order: SVU all day when I'm too lazy to find something else to watch on Netflix

That I spend all my free time at work on Twitter or reading blogs

To take forever to pick out a filter on Instagram

That I order delivery to my apartment at least twice a week because I don't feel like cooking

That I'm already totally over snow and this cold weather (I miss you, Florida!)

I should've just called this the "It's Okay...to be lazy" post haha. What's okay with you this week?

Also, don't forget about the $170 CASH Giveaway I'm co-hosting!

Glossybox March 2013

This months Glossybox has to be my favourite yet. I love the look of everything this month!

I picked up about 5 Eight hour creams a couple of years ago when they were on sale in Superdrug for 99p each, so I know its something I love and will use. This is the perfect size to pop into my make up bag so I can use on the go.
I love the dusky pink nails inc nailvarnish, it's not a colour that I would normally go for but it's such a pretty colour on the nails and I can see myself repurchasing the full version if I use this all up.
I'm excited to try the L'Occitane cream, there was a lot of hype about this product when it was released and has some pretty bold claims - skin is 87% smoother and 78% younger looking after just one use! I'm not sure I need to look much younger as I still get ID'd for the lottery but still, prevention is always nice!
I tested the jelly pong pong lip balm/stain straight away and It's a lovely colour, consistency and comes out surprisingly pigmented on the lips. It's a really nice balm stain and has lasted well so far on my lips!

I'm so happy with this months Glossybox, it also came with a small travel magazine which shows you must see places to travel and has cute little stickers inside.

What did you get in this months Glossybox?

Throwback Thursday: Age 14, 2003

Hello, guys! Thought I would do a "Throwback Thursday" post. I posted this on Instagram a couple weeks ago but thought I would go into a little more detail here. Here I am at age 14- with my natural hair color! - I'm still astounded by the fact that this is nearly 10 years ago!

I was a sophomore in high school and had just discovered makeup. I didn't really know what I was doing (I didn't discover Youtube until late in college >.<) and mostly just wore eyeliner and lip gloss.

I was also horrible at accessorizing. Here, I believe I'm wearing a necklace and pair of earrings from Claire's (that do not go together at all haha). I didn't get my ears pierced until I was 16 so these were clip-ons. I remember how much of a pain it was to try to find good clip-on earrings.

I'm also wearing my school's very unflattering uniform. I was petite so they were a little big for me and the color. There was a gold shirt option as well, but that was even worse... my school used to have maroon, dark green, navy, and white polos instead but then changed to the bright blue and gold since they were our school colors. Oh, how I missed those old uniforms. I only had to wear them for a year though because my junior year I went to public school for the first time.

February Favorites

Despite being the shortest month of the year, February was a crazy event-filled 28 days that brought us Valentine's Day, New York Fashion Week, The Oscars and every other award show out there. January was a bit rocky for me as I was just moving to New York and trying to get settled down while working nearly 50 hours a week, sleeping on a couch for 3 weeks, dealing with severe intestinal pain (and putting off seeing a doctor about it), and coping with the loss of a friend and my kitty who passed away the same week. As difficult as it was (and believe me, I had my share of emotional breakdowns), I survived January into February. Fashion Week was right around the corner, I found a great little apartment with two amazing roommates...things were starting to look up until I got the cursed flu :( I missed a fashion week show and another event I was excited about during my worst days but was luckily able to come around (albeit still pretty ill) for the last day of NYFW for the Badgley Mischka show. It's been an exhausting, roller coaster two months but I'm still fighting and holding on and excited about what my future has in store for me (even if I don't know exactly what that is). But with all that heavy stuff out of the way, let's change gears and move onto what I loved this month.

Revlon Nearly Naked Foundation. This is my new favorite drugstore foundation! It is SUPER light feeling! It's also very moisturizing, blendable, buildable, and natural looking. It still looked great even after 10 hours of wear!

MAC Sheertone Blush in Pinch O'Peach. The name is deceiving as it's not peach-colored at all. It is a very nice pink color that looks great on those with fair-skin. It gives you a wonderful natural, rosy glow. I've been wearing this a lot lately.

Anastasia Brow Powder Duo. I'm just now realizing the tremendous difference filling in your eyebrows (especially when they are as funky as mine) can make! I love this little duo because it's super convenient and comes in two brown shades. I use the lighter shade to fill in my little sparse areas and the darker to sharpen around the edges. Definitely a product I use everyday!

Diorshow Plumping Lash Serum. This product has easily made it to my Holy Grail list. I have very light eyelashes, but this serum amps them up making them look thicker and longer. Any mascara I use, this enhances it and makes it even better. A little pricey as it is Dior, but worth it and I've already purchased a second tube for as soon as this first runs out.

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk. Who doesn't love this product? I've always been a fan of my Milk, but I've been extra loving it these past two months. Even on days when I go completely bare on the eyes, I'll still dab on a little bit of this in the corners just to brighten up my face a little bit and not look completely dead even if I do feel like a zombie.

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Cherish Devotion. I love the subtle pink color (it reminds me of MAC's Creme Cup) and the fact that this stays on for hours! It smells like mint and goes on very smoothly and moisturizes yours lips. The only downside is that it does dry out after a while so I always make sure to pair it with a gloss...like the one below.

NYX Lip Gloss in Beige. Another misleading name - I don't know why it's called "Beige" when it's obviously pink lol. It's a great everyday color that moisturizes without being too sticky. One of my definite go-to lip glosses.

Revlon Lip Butter in Red Velvet. I love my lip butters and my latest purchase is no exception. It's a beautiful super-pigmented deep red color that leaves a nice stain.

China Glaze in Liquid Leather. Look at me becoming a true monochromatic New Yorker! This has been my go to color since moving, since I pretty much don't go a day without wearing something black anymore, it's a safe bet no matter what I'm wearing.

Redken All Soft...again! and Real Control. Redken once again makes my monthly favorites for simply working miracles on my hair. I ran out of my old Redken and turned to Clear Scalp Therapy (which is also amazing), but I had to leave those at home. I came up to NYC with my Lush shampoo and conditioner bars which are great in a pinch but not for longer than week, especially in such cold, dry weather. I'm such a cheapie though I didn't want to bite the bullet and pick up just any NYC-overpriced shampoo but thankfully, on a quick trip back home, I was able to pick up 2 liters of Redken at Ulta during their sale and bring them back up to NYC with me. Just after one wash, my hair was thanking me.

Cup Noodles Chicken Flavor. I lived off of these when I first came to New York. They are SO cheap and easy to make. They're HORRIBLE for you - there's 1600mg of sodium in it, but, my goodness, for how tasty they are and at that price...

Bolthouse Farms in Amazing Mango. On the healthier end of the spectrum, I loveee this juice. It's high in Vitament A, C, and E AND tastes amazing indeed.

Grace and Lace Alpine Thigh Slouch Socks. Aren't these super cute? I heard about them through missglamorazzi from Youtube. They are so soft and comfy and are great for lounging around the apartment or pairing with boots to keep your feet and legs extra warm.

dav Quilted Victoria Rainboots. I adore these rain boots. They've been doubling as my snow boots and go super cute with the Grace and Lace socks. I took my time before buying rain boots because I didn't want just any rain boots. What I love about this is that it's simple and sophisticated and the little things like the quilted and lacing details.

Northface Women's Triclimate Jacket. This jacket is a godsend. I was not properly prepared for the cold weather in New York and this thing has been a life saver. It's super insulated and keeps me warm without being heavy and bulky.

The Mindy Project. This show is sooo underrated!! I was hooked from the pilot (which I've probably seen 6 times now). Mindy Kaling is one of my new role models as she is just so sharp and funny plus has incredible taste and style! I feel like not nearly enough people watch this show and that needs to change STAT.

Django Unchained.  Such a GOOD movie!! It's nearly 3 hours long, but the time flies by because it's such an entertaining film. Tarantino at his best. No wonder he won the Best Screenplay oscar - the script is brilliant as is the acting.

Jennifer Lawrence. Who doesn't love this imperfectly perfect flawless human being?

What were your favorites this month?

First Things First

This week, I discovered a cute new link up called "First Things First" brought to you by Halie. Each week, you are given three "firsts" topics to write about. This week's topics are:

1. First speeding ticket or traffic accident
2. First BIG accomplishment you're proud of
3. First thing you usually reach for in the fridge

1. First speeding ticket or traffic accident
With my driving record (I'm a horrible driver, just look at all the dents in my poor car as proof), you'd probably be surprised to learn that I actually didn't get my first speeding ticket until this very last winter break. I was coming back home early in the morning after staying over at a friend's house. There weren't very many cars, if any, on the road and I was still a little tired so I let my car glide (is that the right word?) as I went down this bridge - a bridge that is notorious for being always being staked out by ticket-happy cops. It didn't seem like I was speeding at all - but apparently I was going 10 over when the cop pulled me over  -__- He was a little touchy with me, especially when he saw my registration was outdated...but luckily, and, yes, I'm just remembering this now - he didn't give me a speeding ticket at all and simply told me to update my registration or there would be a big fine. Thank goodness, all I ended up paying was about $10 after I updated it. So what does that mean? That means I'm still speeding ticket free! Woot!

I guess I might as well write up something quick about my first traffic accident to make up for my lack of an actual first speeding ticket story. Don't worry, I'll make it quick! I was 16 and it was sometime early in my senior year - I was driving to class down the one veryyyy long road into the city. At one point, I saw ahead what looked like a car was turning. I slowed down but  not enough to stop thinking that by the time I reached it, it would have turned into its destination. Apparently, it was not turning but instead was at a complete stop along with another car ahead of it. I did not realize this in time and ended up hitting it with my slowing down, but still very much moving car. Before I knew it it, everything was happening very fast. It wasn't a big collision at all. The van I hit didn't have a scratch (talk about a safe vehicle!). Mine, on the other hand - or at least the front of it, was a wreck from the tap. My airbags deployed hitting me really hard in the face giving me whiplash and my car filled with smoke. The guy I hit was very nice and concerned and a doctor to boot and called an ambulance, to be safe. They were worried about my neck and put this very stiff brace around it then transported me to a hospital. Probably overkill looking back now, but I just recall being in so much shock that day. I do look back and realize how lucky I was though because it could've been so much worse.

2. First BIG accomplishment you're proud of
There's probably something else that precedes it, but I'm blanking so I'm going to say my move to New York! I've always clung to my family and find it really hard to be away from them. It was difficult enough for me to leave them to move to Tallahassee for college, but leaving them to go to the other end of the country? I wasn't sure if I could do it. Two months later I admit I still feel homesick (and I consider both Tallahassee and Melbourne my home now) at times, especially when my dad sends me pictures of my cat and food he's baked or when my friends post their weekend plans on Facebook. However, I know what I did was the right thing to do for myself and my career path. Hopefully, it pays off!

3. First thing you usually reach for in the fridge
Hmm...probably some kind of fruit or vegetable to snack on like an apple or bag of grapes or baby carrots. I love these because there's no preparation involved and they don't leave me feeling guilty for snacking. Perfect!

What were your firsts?

Happies & Crappies

Here are a couple of the good and not so good things in my life this week. I actually had a hard time coming up with "Crappies" so I'm going to take that as a sign of a good week!

Happies

- I hit 300+ subscribers on my Youtube channel! If you haven't checked it out yet, it's youtube.com/geekyfashionista. I make beauty/fashion/random videos (trying to upload twice a week) that I usually post here as well. Feel free to drop by and comment, like, or subscribe :D

- I got free Chili in Times Square for lunch on National Chili Day (February 28)! I'm always a fan of free food, especially when it's chili on a, excuse my pun, chilly day haha XD

- With a little help from The Container Store (my slightly OCD sister would be heaven at this place), I finally organized my tiny room! Pictures coming up in a blog post soon!

- THE Elle Fowler responded to my question during the live Blush Q&A on Facebook! I asked who was her beauty icon and she responded Blake Lively - who I think is a great choice!

- Starting TODAY I'm making a point to exercise more and eat better. I've been sooo bad to my body lately, and I'm ready to make a change. I plan on doing this by joining a gym today (my roommates go to this nice one that's only $20 a month - a steal by NYC standards), doing yoga classes with my friend Chandra at least every Monday (a place by her apartment offers free classes), and doing a Blogilates workout at least three times a week (my friend Abigail got me hooked). I'll try to keep you all updated with my progress! ^^

Crappies

- My iPhone has been really laggy lately and sometimes just freezes altogether, has this happened to any of you guys? What did you do? Should I take it to the Apple store? =/

- My apartment ran out of toilet paper again... >.< but we got some more a couple hours later so it wasn't nearly as bad as last time where it was 2-3 days and we through all our tissues and paper towels and then had to resort to napkins lol.

- My split ends are sooooo bad. I don't know if I can wait until my March 18th appointment. I made that appointment a month ago asking for their next available opening for a simple trim...*sigh* Is that normal for NYC or did they do that purpose since I told them I had bought a Lifebooker certificate - which means I only paid $20 for a $80 cut)?
